Symbid helps entrepreneurs gather over €1 million in its first 11 months of active crowdfunding
14 AUGUST 2012, ROTTERDAM, NETHERLANDS
SummaryThe crowdfunding industry is growing rapidly. Estimated on an astonishing $1.5 billion in the last year, TechCrunch reports an expected growth of 60% in 2012. The same is happening on a micro level. Symbid, a Dutch equity-based crowdfunding platform, helps entrepreneurs get funded via direct equity investments from the crowd. Since the start of the award winning platform, Symbid has helped entrepreneurs gather over €1 million in funds or almost €100K a month, reflecting the industry's growth.
August 14th: Rotterdam, Netherlands –
Officially, Symbid went live in April 2011 but since their first fully proposition, Brand Expedition, started its crowdfunding campaign, over €1 million in funds have been gathered via Symbid. Additionally, seven entrepreneurs have been successfully funded since then while another group of entrepreneurs is working hard to finish their crowdfunding campaigns, too. Amongst the entrepreneurs is "Het Bombardement" (The Bombardment), a Dutch war movie by the producers of the internationally awarded movie “Zwartboek” (Black Book). Another example is "Lost in Time", a mobile game that lets players relive adventures during the Middle Ages while discovering the city equipped with an iPad. Its international ambition and award-winning concept are popular with crowd investors.
Symbid has a couple of aces up its sleeve to continue building the market and the company. Firstly their close cooperation with Crowdsourcing.org that led to Symbid receiving a CAPS (Crowdfunding Accreditation for Platform Standards) accreditation as one of the first crowdfunding platforms in the world. Furthermore Symbid has recently joined in a partnership partnered with FEET, (First European E-money Trust) to secure the safety of online crowd investments. FEET is supervised by The Dutch National Bank and the Authority on Financial Markets. Additionally, ESA (the European Space Agency) and Symbid cooperate on developing an innovative tool that allows Symbid and its partners to use satellites in order to determine the location of its customer. This aims to make absolutely sure that the crowdfunding contracts formed between investors and entrepreneurs are according to the financial legislation in a specific geographical area. Finally, Symbid announced a new service called Symbid Angels during the recently held EBAN (European Business Angels Network) conferences: an investment service directly geared towards business angels, allowing business angels to play a more prominent role within the crowdfunding process.
All these developments have led to an invitation by the European Union for several “Round Table Meetings” to discuss European standards for equity-based crowdfunding investments in order to establish requirements for future crowdfunding platforms. It seems that on top of Symbid’s monetary assets a very large part of its value consists of its capacity to provide the crowd, angel investors and entrepreneurs with high-quality and safe investment methods.
Korstiaan Zandvliet, CEO of Symbid, is proud: “We’re very happy that we’ve been able to establish such a high-quality platform in just a couple of months. This is by no means time to take it slow. We’ve recently developed training tools for entrepreneurs on the platform, are continuously developing our technology, moved to a new headquarters in Rotterdam and established a new team consisting of nine new people spread across the fields of financial engineering, platform development, legal advice, marketing and contract management. We have a long road ahead of us but with all the support from our entrepreneurs and crowd investors we’re sure to continue to grow”.
